She has written 29\u00a0novels, all of which have appeared on\u00a0The New York Times\u00a0bestsellers list. In total, her books have sold over 500 million copies and have been translated into 40 languages. \u00a0Eight of her novels have been adapted for the screen, either as films or television mini-series. She is the younger sister of actress\u00a0Joan Collins.<\/p>\n<p>Collins was born in\u00a0Hampstead,\u00a0London\u00a0in 1937, the younger daughter of Elsa Bessant and Joseph William Collins (died 1988), a theatrical agent whose clients included\u00a0Shirley Bassey,\u00a0The Beatles\u00a0and\u00a0Tom Jones. \u00a0Collins&#8217;\u00a0South African-born father was\u00a0Jewishand her\u00a0British\u00a0mother was\u00a0Anglican. \u00a0A middle child, Collins has an elder sister, actress\u00a0Joan Collins\u00a0(b. 1933) and a younger brother, Bill (b. 1946).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Collins attended\u00a0Francis Holland School, an independent day school for girls in London. \u00a0She was\u00a0expelled\u00a0from the school at age 15;\u00a0after which she threw her school uniform into the\u00a0Thames. \u00a0For a brief period Jackie also was a stage singer and appeared alongside a very young Des O&#8217;Connor when they both featured in the billing for Lonnie Donegan on his UK tour about 1958.
